Minchinhampton 10K & Junior Event

Congratulations to everyone who took part in todays Minchinhampton 10K and Junior Common Run.  A beautiful morning with  sunny spells meant a great event was to take place.

Many Mums running today supported by there kids, who themselves had just had a lovely run around the common, hoping that after they had put themselves through the challenge of a 10K, would be waited on hand and foot for the rest of Mothers Day.

Once the main event of the day had started, it was contested tightly, by local Gloucester Athletics Club runner, Dave Gresswell, last years runner up and Annabel Granger, recent Weston Tough Ten Lady winner and British Masters XC medal winner.

In the end, Bristol and West Athletic Club runner, Annabel Granger won the race by more than 15 seconds, to be the first Lady winner of the Minchinhampton 10K.

Dave Gresswell, 2nd again in this event said “I’m still very pleased, as last year I was beat by local runner Lee Rankin, and this year to a great an admirable lady athlete, as well as being 6 seconds quicker than previously.  This has been great preparation for the London Marathon in 2 weeks time.  I’m coming back again next year as it’s such a great race, challenging and I want to win it once”.

Following on from the frontline of this event, were many great personal achievements in a run that takes participants all the way through one of the most picturesque Cotswold Towns and in to neighbouring villages of Avening, Nags Head and Cherrington.

A total of more than 130 runners completed this years race, more than double from last year.

However, the outstanding performance of the day has to go to 82 year old Allen Watts, originally a local man, but on retirement moved to Wales and returned today to run local, familar and challenging hills for the first time since retirement.  He offered to start early, but he wouldn’t have known the route as Marshals and signs hadn’t be setup, so begun the race with everyone else.

When he reached the finishing line, he received a rapturous applause and commented on the fact he felt like he had won.

Halfway House Sizzling Six 2010

July 22, 2010 by

Halfway House Sizzling Six 2010

The Halfway House Sizzling Six multi-terrain race took place on Thursday 22nd July.  With a very big thunderstorm looming, it was potentially going to be a very drenching run across Minchinhampton Common.  This Cotswold Allrunners members and by invitation only run, takes in the surroundings of Minchinhampton Town and the nearby village of Box, with a 1 mile ascent from Devil’s Elbow back to the Halfway House.

This year with more than 70 runners entered, is was a fantastic ocean of purple as Dave Smith set the runners on their 6.4km multi-terrain run.  Martin Low, took a very early lead, only to lose his way and add extra distance to his race, but was still victorious in a time of 28:07mins.

Next was Simon Calladine, 2nd with a time of 29:10, faster than last year and one place better.  The battle of the Varley’s was taken place in 3rd and 4th, and James just took it over last years 2nd place runner Peter, in a time of 29:12 and 29:24 respectively.

The ladies race was won by Amelia Varley, also 6th overall, in a sizzling time of 29:41 and to break the race record set last year by Kate McEvoy.  Second and third place was closely contested between Lucy king and Trudy Chudleigh, the final hill section from Box, seemed to be just a little bit more manageable for Lucy as she crossed the finish line in 30:54 and a only a few seconds later in 31:09, was Trudy.

The John Pope Cup which is a handicap awarded trophy, based on age related performance and in memory of John who was a Gloucestershire based athlete and patron of the Halfway House, brother to Dinah and Cheryl, was won by Cotswold Allrunner Mal Walker.
