Minchinhampton 10K & Junior Event
April 3, 2011 by CA Press
Congratulations to everyone who took part in todays Minchinhampton 10K and Junior Common Run. A beautiful morning with sunny spells meant a great event was to take place.
Many Mums running today supported by there kids, who themselves had just had a lovely run around the common, hoping that after they had put themselves through the challenge of a 10K, would be waited on hand and foot for the rest of Mothers Day.
Once the main event of the day had started, it was contested tightly, by local Gloucester Athletics Club runner, Dave Gresswell, last years runner up and Annabel Granger, recent Weston Tough Ten Lady winner and British Masters XC medal winner.
In the end, Bristol and West Athletic Club runner, Annabel Granger won the race by more than 15 seconds, to be the first Lady winner of the Minchinhampton 10K.
Dave Gresswell, 2nd again in this event said “I’m still very pleased, as last year I was beat by local runner Lee Rankin, and this year to a great an admirable lady athlete, as well as being 6 seconds quicker than previously. This has been great preparation for the London Marathon in 2 weeks time. I’m coming back again next year as it’s such a great race, challenging and I want to win it once”.
Following on from the frontline of this event, were many great personal achievements in a run that takes participants all the way through one of the most picturesque Cotswold Towns and in to neighbouring villages of Avening, Nags Head and Cherrington.
A total of more than 130 runners completed this years race, more than double from last year.
However, the outstanding performance of the day has to go to 82 year old Allen Watts, originally a local man, but on retirement moved to Wales and returned today to run local, familar and challenging hills for the first time since retirement. He offered to start early, but he wouldn’t have known the route as Marshals and signs hadn’t be setup, so begun the race with everyone else.
When he reached the finishing line, he received a rapturous applause and commented on the fact he felt like he had won.

I’m on a high
September 16, 2010 by CA Press
Hello! My name’s Donna,
I’m a on a high at the moment after completing the Bristol Half Marathon, something which I would never have dreamt of doing at the start of the year.
Busy Life equalled a few minutes on the treadmill every now and then
Until a year ago, I only ran a few minutes at a time on a treadmill every now and again as I was living a busy life as a journalist in London, although I had managed a 10k fun run before but was very slow! In January, after moving back to the Shire,
I was feeling fat and unfit after losing any running fitness I had previously.
SO, I decided to make some big changes.
I started eating healthier, cutting down on any bad food and running! I will never forget that first run outside in the frost on a Friday, just a short job around my village of North Nibley, near Dursley. It wasn’t far but it nearly killed me! I decided to go out more on the lanes and after a few weeks could run 30 minutes. I soon became addicted to running and everything to do with it. I bought a high-tech watch, would make running playlists for my iPod – but as someone who gets bored easier, soon started to tire of the same routes and running alone.
Addicted to running, but on my own soon became bored
I googled local running clubs and came across Cotswold Allrunners. It looked just what I was looking for – a club with like-minded members of all abilities. I contacted the club coach, he replied and was really encouraging.
Joining the club! – There was need to be nervous!
I was nervous on my first session that I’d be the slowest, but I wasn’t and even if I was, it wouldn’t matter as everyone’s together and supports each other.
It’s a great group and everyone’s so friendly! And in-between the wonderful chats on beautiful trails around Nailsworth, Simon gives you running tips and encouragement.
Bristol Half Marathon – 5th September 2010
Last Sunday (September 5th) took part in the Bristol Half Marathon. It was raining, tough at times but I did it – and it was a great feeling to have ticked that off my list of things I want to do in life! And another thing I have to celebrate is that I have now lost over three stone since starting running regularly. I am discovering muscles in places I didn’t know I could get them!
What’s NEXT?
I am doing another Half Marathon – the Stroud – in a few weeks and have also entered the ballot for the London Marathon!
Imagine that?!It’d take a lot of training but if I get in, I will do it – and if I don’t get in, I will do it one day! It’s on my list of ‘things to do’!
A big thanks to all at Cotswold Allrunners for being so welcoming and encouraging
Woodchester Park 12th Sep 2010
September 12, 2010 by CA Press
Well done to everyone who took in the challenge of mud, rock, steep inclines, sharp decents and real multi-terrain running, in this years Woodchester Park 8MT organised by Stroud and District Athletics Club. The race which starts at the top of the park, falls for a about a mile, before the first hill comes in to sight.
At 2 miles, one of the early morning training groups had made a detour to cheer on their fellow club runners, which was gladly received by all and hopefully motivated the racers over the next 5 miles.
So once again on a great sunny Sunday morning in mid September, Rose Niland, who is in great shape at the moment, improved on last years time by over 4 mins, to be the first Cotswold Allrunner over the finishing line and 6th Lady overall. Gino Beaumont who has returned to racing after a great London Marathon in April was next finishing in a time of 1:14hr, closely followed by Natasha Berri on a course that suits her running.
Recent new member Steve Thacker, in his first ever race tackled the last climb in the park, to cross the finishing just line in 1:21hr. Just a few minutes later, were Briony Fern and Sasha Field (seen above), who decided that a 2 hour delayed start to the day was worth paying £7 for, ran a well paced run together.
Angie Ayling and Sue Harris, had also ran the race together, only to allow David Gill (pictured right) to get between them on the final hill, all completing the course a few seconds under or over the 90 minutes.
Finally Lucy Trowse, Layla Slaughter, Sharon Smith and Amy Pearce (in photo at top) all tackled that last mile together, refusing to walk up the final slope and with great determination reached the finish line in need of some refreshment.

Halfway House Sizzling Six 2010
The Halfway House Sizzling Six multi-terrain race took place on Thursday 22nd July. With a very big thunderstorm looming, it was potentially going to be a very drenching run across Minchinhampton Common. This Cotswold Allrunners members and by invitation only run, takes in the surroundings of Minchinhampton Town and the nearby village of Box, with a 1 mile ascent from Devil’s Elbow back to the Halfway House.
This year with more than 70 runners entered, is was a fantastic ocean of purple as Dave Smith set the runners on their 6.4km multi-terrain run. Martin Low, took a very early lead, only to lose his way and add extra distance to his race, but was still victorious in a time of 28:07mins.
Next was Simon Calladine, 2nd with a time of 29:10, faster than last year and one place better. The battle of the Varley’s was taken place in 3rd and 4th, and James just took it over last years 2nd place runner Peter, in a time of 29:12 and 29:24 respectively.
The ladies race was won by Amelia Varley, also 6th overall, in a sizzling time of 29:41 and to break the race record set last year by Kate McEvoy. Second and third place was closely contested between Lucy king and Trudy Chudleigh, the final hill section from Box, seemed to be just a little bit more manageable for Lucy as she crossed the finish line in 30:54 and a only a few seconds later in 31:09, was Trudy.
The John Pope Cup which is a handicap awarded trophy, based on age related performance and in memory of John who was a Gloucestershire based athlete and patron of the Halfway House, brother to Dinah and Cheryl, was won by Cotswold Allrunner Mal Walker.
